Help with costs during the school holidays

The school holidays can put pressure on families, especially during the ongoing cost of living crisis. There are options available to ease this pressure, with ways to increase your income and extra support for those struggling.

Maximising your income

The cost of living crisis is impacting us all. Make sure that you’re getting all the support you’re entitled to. Using an online benefit calculator is a quick and easy way to check your entitlement. If you’re not sure how to do this or don’t have access to an internet device you can pop into one of our offices where one of our friendly team can help you.

Childcare costs

There is tax free childcare available for working families to help fund accredited childcare, including holiday clubs, childminders and sports activities. Check your eligibility.

If you claim the childcare element of Universal Credit, you can also claim back up to 85% of your childcare costs during both term time and the school holidays. There is a limit of £1,014.63 per month for one child, or £1,739.37 per month for 2 or more children.

Healthy Start Scheme

The Healthy Start scheme is designed to help low income families access healthier foods. The prepaid card scheme is for those who are over 10 weeks pregnant, and/or have a child under 4. Find out more about the Healthy Start Scheme.

Cheap eats for kids

Costs in school holidays can start to mount up, but there are options available to treat the kids while keeping within budget. Many shops and restaurants are offering free or low cost meals to children during the school holidays. Please be aware that some of these locations require a paying adult.

Holiday Activities and Food Programme (HAF)

A scheme run by Wigan Council provides activities and healthy meals to those aged 5-16 during the school holidays. This scheme is available to families who are claiming benefits-related free school meals. Eligible families should receive e-vouchers to book activities. If your child is eligible for free school meals but you haven’t received any vouchers, you should contact your child’s school. Find out more.
